Mike Cowell

Mike Cowell

Michael Ray Cowell, 67, passed away on February 16, 2021. He was born at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, on February 19, 1953, to Ralph and Madeline Cowell, the third of their five children.

He was a member of the graduating class of 1971 at Highland Park High School, where he excelled in academic studies as well as being a member of the school marching band. He later received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications from DeVry University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He worked in the technology field until retiring in 2011.

His greatest passions in life were his children and music. He took being a father very seriously, playing a constant role in his children’s lives, and in the lives of his stepsons. The four of them and his grandchildren were his greatest source of joy, and he took immense pride in each of them and their accomplishments. His music career spanned from his early garage band days in the mid 1960’s until his passing, during which he played thousands of shows as a member of many different bands. Known by many as the “Human Jukebox”, his ability to learn songs and retain them was, truly, amazing. He was also a sports enthusiast enjoying sports of all kinds, but none were more important to him than his Kansas City Royals baseball, and Kansas City Chiefs football. His remarkable intelligence and passion for imparting his wisdom were among his defining traits, and as an avid history buff, he enjoyed both educating himself and others, particularly regarding local history.

He is survived by his son, Charles Cowell (Hannah) Topeka; daughter, Sarah Cowell (Avery Frantzen) Topeka; stepson, Eric Hollingsworth, Webb City; stepson, Michael Hollingsworth (Theresa) Virginia Beach; grandsons, Judah and Jackson Cowell; granddaughters, Madeline and Cora Frantzen; step-grandchildren Brayden and Brynlee Hollingsworth; step-grandson Michael Hollingsworth; sister, Lucinda Ostler; and nephews, Brian and Jonathan Ostler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, eldest sister, Jennifer Cowell, elder brother, Steve Cowell, and youngest sister, Deborah Cowell.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 25, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. Celebration of

Mike was a great guy. We had a wonderful experience in Ben Tice's Stage band. Many fond memories.
